Roads are built for the purposes of making vehicular movement from one place to another easier and also for the movement of goods to where they are needed. It is a major factor that can not be over looked in transportation. In Nigeria today we rely so much on roads.Road transportation is the most poular form of transportation in Nigeria but the poor state of these roads is alarming. This problem cuts across federal state and local roads. The federal roads for instance are the most important in the country, they connect major cities in the country e.g. Abuja, Lagos, Port-hacourt, Jos, Enugu,Kano e.t.c. and with the influx of people from other cities into these cities in search of greener pastures and also their returning back to their hometowns during festive seasons and transportation of large quantity of goods to these cities because of their well poulated nature these roads become very busy and also very important an example of such roads is the Lagos-Ore-Benin road. Motorists who ply these roads describe them as nightmares. They do not only make the journeys twice as long as they ought to be, they also provide a safe haven for armed robbers who take advantage of these bad spots to attack motorists and also the rate of accidents on these roads are increasing at an alarming rate, recently a commercial bus coming from Zamfara and another one coming from the opposite direction collided when the former in an attempt to avoid a pothole rammed into the latter at top speed causing the death of about nineteen people. If that pothole was not there the accident would not have occured. This is a very important area that needs to be looked into by the government if the they want the citizens to feel their good governance.
The new government is making positive moves towards repairing these roads but Nigerians are used to past administrations making promises about these roads but do not end up fullfiling the promises. This means that the present administration has a lot of work to do to win back the trust of the citizens of this great nation.
The state roads which are those roads that link different parts of a state should not also be left out because they are very important. I think if our roads in this country are at least 80-90% good, it will go a long way in improving the life of the common man because even the cost of goods will reduce because the traders who bring in the goods are affected by the state of these roads too.
