NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES

Our country Nigeria has got a lot of higher institutions especially universities, but still the nation is struggling to improve on the quality of graduates produced at the end of every academic year. Nowadays you can see graduates who can hardly express themselves i.e. speak good and comprehensible English. Many of them do not really understand what life is all about. A university is not a place where you only learn about the course you want to study but also a training ground where you learn how to face life’s challenges. It’s a place where you are groomed into a total man or woman.
The question still is why is the situation so with all the universities we have in Nigeria? Maybe the problem is that all these universities do not take their time to really mould these young men and women into what they are supposed to be and not what many of them are. Many of these schools are ill equipped, you can see a graduate of computer science who does not know how to operate a computer or has never even used one. Its not good for a great nation like this.
Except for the private universities springing up very rapidly and have what it takes to give quality education to the students but the issue is how many people can afford them? Some of them charge as much as three to five hundred thousand naira for one academic year, which is high for an average Nigeria student except for the rich in the society that can comfortably afford it.
The government has to ensure that all these things are put into place. With the new government that has spent a little over hundred and has done quite well, there is hope that all these ills in the society will be looked into. Just like the way the past administration embarked on refurbishing all the teaching hospitals in the country, the same should be done to the universities, with this there will be no need for our youths to go to other countries to get a university education as their hope in our Nigerian universities will be restored.
